Foodie Travels: Pita Wheel, Gastonia, N.C.

Main Street Burger on pita and fries

We’re always full and satisfied when we leave the Pita Wheel, and we’re also talking about how much we love the service station-turned-restaurant.

Pita Wheel began almost a decade ago as a food truck. Its owners then opened a brick-and-mortar restaurant in Dallas, closed that restaurant to open a Gastonia location (which we’ve now visited most often) and then re-opened in Dallas to operate two total storefront dining options. Are you keeping up?

All you really need to know is that Pita Wheel serves up incredibly fresh and filling burgers, pita and Philly sandwiches, and other mains, along with delicious fries, homemade chips, mac and cheese, and other sides. There’s also a bevy of craft beer and other alcohol options, though I love more that I can order Cheerwine.

Service seems to always be quick, and it’s also friendly, no matter how large the crowd in the dining areas, which include bar and table seating inside, as well as picnic-style tables outside.

It’s the kind of place you can almost certainly visit and eat within an hour if you’re not dining with a large group. And it won’t empty your wallet. One person can get a good meal with a drink for about $15.

Then there’s the atmosphere, particularly at the Gastonia location. It starts with the old gas station aesthetic, complete with functioning garage-bay doors. There are awesome artistic murals on a couple of walls inside. And there are old signs and many other classic touches throughout the restaurant.

Pita Wheel is the kind of local restaurant that’s fit for any occasion, whether a couples or family meal, a night out with friends, a date or a business lunch. The menu is actually quite simple, but it will appeal to almost any diner. Everything we’ve consumed has been top notch, always a true #FoodieScore.

Pita Wheel, 110 S. York St., Gastonia, N.C. (also 1108 E. Main St., Dallas, N.C.)
